In Service of God and Man:The General Letters of Sydney Kittredge Bunker in
Jaffna Ceylon 1937-1966 is an epistolary account of a lifetime spent in
Ceylon. Syd Bunker wrote what he called “General Letters” to
family and friends several times a year. Ruth, his wife, collected and
cataloged these letters and in 2015 I, Grace Bunker, their daughter,
took time in the summer to read all the letters one after another.
I was swept away with the incredible story of love and service they
told. They brought my father back so he was as real as when he was
alive.
Syd began as the principal of a boys’ school run by missionaries in
northern Ceylon. Soon, he was adding new buildings, new staff,
and an entirely new undergraduate degree section associated with
London University. Becoming College President gave Syd added
responsibilities for fundraising, political, and legislative activities,
causing him to travel far and wide in Ceylon. Along with Syd’s
commitment to the college, he was also committed to doing all he
could to assist in bringing about church union in India and Ceylon
- devoting much time to the work.
In 1947, the United Church of South India became a reality; the
first church union in the world to include the Anglican Church.
Due to his work with theologians and church workers involved
in higher education in India and other Asian countries, Syd was
elected to a leadership position in the Asian Christian Higher
Education Council.
